Come Sail Awolnation with Me

Having spent the better half of the past week or so in New Mexico, with limited Internet access and distractions of the so-called "modern" world, it was only fitting that the subject of UFO's came up in one of the many conversations I had while in the Land of Enchantment.

So, I was thinking of songs that have to do with Alien abductions, and there are quite a few, in many shapes and sizes. Cat Stevens was wont to write about such experiences in songs like "Longer Boats" and "House of Freezin' Steel." Who can forget the Classic Rock anthem of Billy Thorpe's "Children of the Sun" (the movie, Children of the Corn was another topic, but that's for another post...), or the all-time favorite, Dennis De Young belting out Styx's "Come Sail Away"? No classic radio station in the range of 93.3 to 96.5 in the US nation would be worth it salt without that one.

But, I was thinking of the more recent homage to the the stygian hair band's opus magnum, that being Awolnation's "Sail."

I first heard this in 2010 when I was visiting the States and it became a staple for me on youtube for quite some time. Last year when driving across New Mexico and Texas with my young daughter, it came on several times and she remarked that it was about angry angels at one point. Cue up the Twilight Zone music now...

Looking out at the New Mexican sky, it is not hard to lose oneself in its vastness of stars, planets, and galaxies. Who knows what, or who is out there...I wonder...
